Defending Against Alzheimer’s: How Individualized Glutathione Therapy Protects Your Brain

Nov 01, 2026
Glutathione is one of your brain’s natural defenses against oxidative stress — and researchers are investigating its connection to Alzheimer’s disease. Learn why this “master antioxidant” has become an intriguing area of brain health research.

Your brain works hard around the clock, and all that activity comes with a byproduct: oxidative stress. Normally, the body possesses antioxidant mechanisms that help maintain oxidative stress at manageable levels. Among the most important antioxidants is glutathione, which your body produces naturally inside your cells.

Researchers are increasingly interested in what happens when this defense system becomes less effective, particularly as we age and in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

At Advanced Medical Care in Queens and Brooklyn, New York, our team takes an individualized approach to wellness and longevity. One supportive therapy we offer is intravenous (IV) glutathione, which delivers this important antioxidant directly into the bloodstream.

Why glutathione is called the “master antioxidant”

Glutathione is made from three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamate. Your cells produce it naturally, and it plays several roles in protecting normal cellular function.

One of its best-known jobs is helping neutralize reactive oxygen species, often called free radicals. When production of these unstable molecules overwhelms your body’s antioxidant defenses, the resulting imbalance is known as oxidative stress.

Glutathione also helps regenerate other antioxidants and supports detoxification and immune function. Because of these wide-ranging roles, it’s often called the “master antioxidant.”

What is the connection between oxidative stress and Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a complex disease, and no single process causes it. Oxidative stress, however, has emerged as an important piece of the puzzle.

Excess oxidative stress can damage proteins, lipids, mitochondria, and other structures brain cells need to function normally. Researchers have also found alterations in the glutathione antioxidant system in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis, for example, found that activity of glutathione peroxidase — an antioxidant enzyme that uses glutathione to help control oxidative stress — was lower in people with Alzheimer’s in most of the studies analyzed.

A 2023 systematic review determined that most studies comparing individuals with Alzheimer’s dementia to cognitively healthy adults indicated reduced brain glutathione levels.

Those findings don’t prove that low glutathione causes Alzheimer’s. They do help explain why researchers are studying glutathione and other antioxidant strategies as possible ways to support brain health.

Can increasing glutathione improve cognitive function?

This is where the science becomes particularly interesting — but also where it’s important to separate what researchers suspect from what they’ve proven.

Research has linked glutathione depletion to cognitive decline, leading scientists to examine whether reestablishing the brain’s antioxidant defenses might offer therapeutic benefits. Researchers continue to examine methods to boost glutathione levels, such as supplements that provide nutrients the body needs to create it.

However, IV glutathione hasn’t been proven to prevent, reverse, or slow Alzheimer’s disease. It shouldn’t replace a neurological evaluation or established Alzheimer’s treatment.

At Advanced Medical Care, we use glutathione as an individualized wellness therapy, not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Why IV glutathione?

You can get nutrients that support your body’s glutathione production through food, and your cells continuously make glutathione.

Advanced Medical Care also offers glutathione intravenously, delivering it directly into your bloodstream while bypassing the digestive system.

That doesn’t mean everyone concerned about memory or aging needs glutathione therapy. When determining whether IV glutathione is beneficial for you, our team considers your health history, symptoms, wellness goals, and other aspects of your care.

If you’re experiencing memory loss or other cognitive changes, we don’t assume oxidative stress is the only cause. Advanced Medical Care also provides comprehensive neurological evaluation for memory loss and dementia, including advanced diagnostic testing when appropriate.

Give your brain more than one line of defense

There’s no single therapy that can guarantee protection against Alzheimer’s disease. Brain health reflects a complicated combination of age, genetics, cardiovascular health, lifestyle, and other factors we’re still learning about.

Glutathione adds another intriguing piece to that picture. As one of the body’s primary antioxidant defenses, it helps protect cells from oxidative stress, and researchers continue to study its connection to cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s.

At Advanced Medical Care in Queens and Brooklyn, New York, we take an individualized approach to wellness and brain health.
